Winter 2017 Collegiate Challenge: NYU

New Paltz, New York University
The ladies hockey team of New Paltz, New York visited during the winter break Collegiate Challenge, building the future home of two families in the Pinehurst subdivision in Edgewater.

Students soon become masters of the power tools.

While they were here, the group experienced house building from power tools to paint, measuring, sawing, building walls, hammering, and really working hard to help these families reach their dream of home ownership. During their week, the warm sun shone every day, and everyone really enjoyed working outside with lots of company from the big group of volunteers we have at this time of the year.

After work, the group toured the area, enjoying the beach, Canaveral National Seashore, Ponce Lighthouse, Disney Springs, Cocoa Beach, and more. Each night, they sampled local restaurants, and on one afternoon, after building, went kayaking at Cracker Creek with Habitat staff, followed by a barbecue and bonfire.

Kayaking in Cracker Creek where we saw an Alligator, Manatee, Turtles, and many bird species.

The group enjoy a rest around the bonfire, in the company of a flock of Peacocks and a herd of White Tailed Deer.

The students resided in our fully equipped, comfortable Edgewater Habi-Dorm, which sleeps 16.
If your university, mission, Global Village, or other group would like to join us for a Habi-Tourism experience, please contact Coralie Gilson, Outreach Manager for a brochure and more information:
