NATIONAL WOMEN BUILD WEEK, April 30-May 6, 2016, at Pinehurst Subdivision, Edgewater
Building safe, affordable homes for local families
in our community during the week preceding Mother’s Day.
Empowering women to stand up against
substandard and unacceptable living conditions in our area.
The theme this year was a celebration of mothers’ love, and what could be more appropriate than 85 women building three homes for three moms with young children in our new subdivision in Edgewater.
Dixie Mackey, Lisa Kenney and Courtney Williams worked alongside the ladies, framing and siding their future homes, excited at the prospect of moving to this beautiful location soon. The throng of ladies got to experience all the different power tools, and learned a lot of new skills with the patient help of our expert volunteers and staff.
Building with the groups each day were several City of New Smyrna Beach officials, including Judy Reiker, Vice Mayor, Pam Brandaccio, City Manager, Rhonda Walker, Airport Manager, Michelle Updike, City Projects Mgr, and Teresa Pope, Asst. Director of NSB Housing Authority. Also joining us from the City Government of Ormond Beach was Cindy Berglund.
Volunteers from Humana, Sun Trust Bank, Fidelity National Title, Coronado United Methodist Church, and individuals from the community enjoyed three days of building together.
Our AmeriCorps Team Leader, Austin Falter assisted the women builders, and PUBLIX graciously provided the refreshments from their bakery and deli.
National Women Build Week is sponsored by Lowe’s who provided a workshop for women to learn how to use power tools and the correct ways to paint. They also provided volunteers at the build, and a grant towards materials for these homes.
