Eighty ladies from the community offer two days of service to raise their hammers against poverty housing.
The Women Build cause is threefold.
- It raises money towards building homes for those in need of safe, decent housing.
- It raises awareness of the problem of poverty housing here in our community.
- It brings more volunteers to our affiliate, both as individuals, and as teams coming from businesses, churches, and organizations.
Building together is also fun, rewarding physical work, where we make new friends, enjoy hard work mixed with a social scene, and escape from the office routine to volunteer for a day, working for a very worthwhile cause. This year, the ladies began building our first duplex, designed to house those of lower income, such as singles and couples, and retirees. We began with a slab, and ended late Friday afternoon with the frame completed.
Each day, the groups of women met for lunch together with staff and volunteer instructors. They heard testimonials from single moms who had received Habitat homes, and whose lives had improved greatly since, and enjoyed a huge lunch provided by Publix along with baked goodies brought by the ladies themselves.
This year, pink hard hats were provided and decorated for a contest. The hats were beautiful, with many unique designs and a lot of work put into them. Each deserved a prize and it was hard for the judges to pick the winners.
And more hats…
The weather was beautiful, and the event was a great success, thanks to our sponsors Fidelity National Title, Regions Bank, Sun Trust Bank, Lowe’s of Ormond, and individual donors. Thank you ladies for making this a great Women Build.
Next year we will grow even bigger, with more teams, more days and much more fundraising.
