We are proud to host our first team from Habitat Global Village who worked with SEV Habitat for a week, arriving on 2nd April and departing 9th. The group of 11 men and women from all over the USA resided in our dorm, and built for 5 mornings, also helping at the Re-Store during two afternoons. They toured Habitat homes in New Smyrna and Edgewater, and worked hard building and helping finish three homes in the Pinehurst subdivision. During their stay, they also enjoyed the area, visiting the Kennedy Space Center, Turtle Mound River Tours, and Cracker Creek kayaking. They enjoyed learning about the history and ecology of the area, as well as sampling local restaurants and shopping. They accomplished a great deal during their time at the construction site, helping to finish 26 and 22 Pine Brook Drive, and building the walls of number 27.
The coordinator of the group was Nichole MacKinnon, who put the group together and worked really hard to make the week a success and was their van driver to every destination throughout the week. Nichole traveled from Seattle. Other members of the team came from Chicago, Denver, Wisconsin, Portland, Oregon, NJ, Dallas, Boston and Brooklyn.
The Habitat Global Village program brings teams from all over the world to help provide a work force for Habitat affiliates in many countries . We decided to join this program as our area is so interesting and diverse, and because we are very busy building homes year round, with a great need for more volunteers during the quieter months when much of the transient work force has left. We also hope for more donations to help fund building materials. Each member of the Global village group raised $550 on top of their expenses for the trip.
None of the team knew each other before they came here, and by the middle of the week, they had formed a team that bonded perfectly in work and in lasting friendships. We cannot thank them enough and were amazed by the amount of home construction they accomplished. All of them will be welcomed here always, and we hope they will return and that more Global Village groups will choose us as their destination.
